Wrought iron
England; 17th or 18th century
Pot-hooks came into use with the open hearth when the only means of controlling heat for cooking was by adjusting the height of cooking pots suspended over the fire. They disappeared with the introduction of the enclosed range in the 18th century. The ratcheted (saw-like) teeth and loosely hinged hasp allowed the pot-hook to be lengthened or shortened as required. This example is unusually ornamental, pierced with a design of a blacksmith at his anvil with the tools of his trade.
