WEATHERVANE
Wrought iron
England; 18th century

The word 'vane' originally meant a turning metal flag or pennant above a building to show the rank and family of the owner. During the 17th century pointers and compass points were added to show the wind direction as well. Weathervanes were usually mounted on a single vertical stem, frequently decorated with scrollwork. Vanes could be square or forked and were often pierced with monograms, heraldic designs or dates. Other examples show the vane as a ship or creature.
