Materials and techniques | Copper alloy: the metal was sent for testing by the Museum in the 1980s/1990s, and the assay established the following proportions of trace metals in the copper:
zinc - 6.2%; lead - 1.0%; tin - 3.6%; iron - 0.24%; arsenic - 0.03%; bismuth - 0.0005%; silver - 0.08% |

Object history | Nothing is known of the early history of this figure, which would originally have been applied to a crucifix. It was given to the Museum in 1955 by the collector Dr Walter Leo Hildburgh. He may have acquired it in Spain, since the registry entry for the piece identifies it as Spanish. However, comparison with other figures suggests that stylistically it is closer to twelfth-century French models. |
