This is one of a pair of verge-heads shaped like a six-sided Gothic tower designed to be fitted on top of a rod. During high ceremonies the verger, a church official, held the staff before the bishop or dean as a symbol of office.

Physical description | Verge head, silver, (one of a pair). The head in the form of a six-sided tower with six pierced traceried windows surmounted by ogee canopies and separated by round turrets; pointed roof pierced with traceried sides and finial formed of cast leaves surmounted by a cross.Tubular, slightly tapering socket attached to the head by a flattened , six sided knop with a turned finial at each corner. |
