This is one of a pair of verge-heads shaped like a six-sided Gothic tower designed to be fitted on top of a rod. During high ceremonies the verger, a church official, held the staff before the bishop or dean as a symbol of office.

Physical description
Verge head, silver, (one of a pair). The head in the form of a six-sided tower with six pierced traceried windows surmounted by ogee canopies and separated by round turrets; pointed roof pierced with traceried sides and finial formed of cast leaves surmounted by a cross.Tubular, slightly tapering socket attached to the head by a flattened , six sided knop with a turned finial at each corner.

Part of parcel cresting around bottom of head of 256 broken away. One of turrets on 256A dented and disformed. Part of 256 is later replacement.
