Ingo Maurer (born 1932) is one of the most innovative lighting designers of the twentieth century. He trained as a graphic designer but set up his own lighting design consultancy in 1966. 'Bibibibi' was designed in 1982 as a witty comment on the seriousness of contemporary design.
The lamp is in the form of a standing bird, the shaded light acting as its body. The natural quality of the feathers, a popular ingredient in Post-Modern design, contrasts with the technical precision of the lamp. Maurer once described the lightbulb as 'the perfect meeting of industry and poetry'. 'Bibibibi' brings a playful and poetic sensibility to a practical everyday object.
