Hall stool of mahogany. The serpentine scrolled top is supported by four 'S'-curves ending in scroll feet, which are joined front and back by square 'C'-scrolls, decorated in the centre by an acanthus leaf and each joined to the seat by a roundel enclosing a coat of arms. The legs are fluted on the outside edges and joined at the sides by turned stretchers.

Physical description
Hall stool of mahogany. The serpentine scrolled top is supported by four 'S'-curves ending in scroll feet, which are joined front and back by square 'C'-scrolls, decorated in the centre by an acanthus leaf and each joined to the seat by a roundel enclosing a coat of arms. Mahogany

Hall stools were an alternative to the more usual hall chairs. This example has the carved coat of arms of the owner set in a roundel beneath the seat (possibly the Fitch family of Thorpe Hall, Lincolnshire, or a branch of the same family at Danbury Place or Woodham Walter, Essex). Stools of this type were also used in libraries; Thomas Chippendale supplied a very similar set for the library of Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1764.
