The manual start 250v 50 cycle synchronous motor drives both the hands and also the drum operating the aoutomata in the upper third of the case. A further drum with lamp and sheet of dyed gelatine rotates to give the effect of the changing light of night and day.

Object history
The first patent covering the design was taken out in 1941 by J. S. Thatcher, with later ammendments covered by patents taken out in 1944 and 1947 by J. F. Summersgill. The manufacturers were the limited company of Vitascope Indusries on the Isle of Man.
