Chest on Stand
1680-1700 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Chest of three drawers with raised mouldings (disguised as half drawers) on a separate low stand with spiral twist legs united by moulded stretchers, which contains a single drawer (disguised as a half drawer) and stands on bun feet. The sides bolection moulded. The escutcheon plates and drop handles are of brass. The drawers in both the stand and chest are decorated with geometric moulding, which varies: on the chest, the upper and lower drawers match while the larger, middle drawer has a more complex design.
Construction
Joined (single pegged joints) and panelled; the drawers nailed. The back has three vertically grained softwood boards which are tongue and grooved, nailed over a central horizontal tenoned mid-rail. On the chest unit, the base and cornice mouldings are nailed, and the top has two thin boards nailed over a central batten. Between the drawers at the front runs a moulding that is integral to the front mid-rail. There are no dust boards but four boards provide a bottom to the chest unit. The drawer bottoms are supported along their edges with a two part runner nailed at each side to the main vertical corner uprights. All the drawers are made in the same way, with oak fronts and bottoms, softwood sides and back. The sides are nailed to the back (with rounded corners) and to the rebated front board; the bottoms consist of four boards (running front to back) nailed up and fitted with birds' mouth joints. Mitred mouldings and a plain muntin are applied to the drawer fronts. Each drawer has a modern lock and two cast brass drop handle with a Tudor rose backplate which also appear to be 19th century; the stand drawer bottom has been repaired with blue paper between the contraction gaps.
