Two part case with lid of cylindrical form. Wood covered with moulded leather. The body is decorated with four vertical panels, two above, filled in with a lion rampant and a hound rampant respectively, and two below, similarly filled, all against a punched, granular ground. The panels are separated vertically by bands of grooves alternating with leaf ornament and horizontally by similar bands of grooves alternaing with floral scrollwork. The cover bears a scrolled shield of arms on the top and has grooves and a wreath about the edge. There are four loops and the cover is pierced with two holes for a cord (missing).

Historical context
Of this type of long document case see Günter Gall, Leder im Europäischen Kunsthandwerk, Braunschweig 1965, p164: usually about 35cm and used by riding messengers to transport documents safely. On the sides they usually have handles, and are often divided into two strips that are covered with warriors, nudes, hunting animals etc. but rarely weapons.
