Physical description

Front of a chimney-piece of oak, carved with a shield bearing, quarterly the arms of Della Rovere and Schönroide. Inscribed + 10 SCHOEROID + STE + AISPLICE + SEDIS + PTHONORIS + DECANS + AQVEN

Arms: Quarterly: 1 & 4, An Oak tree eradicated and acorned: 2 & 3, A bend counter-compony. The shield ensigned with an Ecclesiastical hat supporting six tassels on either side of the shield.

Object history note

Bought for £29 17s 1d. from Duseigneur, 18 Rue Séguier, Paris 'cracked, split, worn and portions missing' (RF 17245/1902 with report by Walter Crane (recorded 2017 as having been destroyed).
Apparently made for John Schönroide, Protopotentary of the Holy Apostolic See, Dean of Aix-la-Chapelle (c.1538), German Ecclesiastic. Arms: Quarterly: 1 & 4, An Oak tree eradicated and acorned: 2 & 3, A bend counter-compony. The shield ensigned with an Ecclesiastical hat supporting six tassels on either side of the shield.
