Portion of the front of an organ gallery. It is divided into three compartments by two pilasters and surmounted by a cornice, the central part of which is convex. Each compartment is carved with a round-headed arch, and beneath them are the following subjects, beginning on the left:
1. Salome with the youthful St James and St John the Evangelist
2. A standing female figure holding an open book, and four children in front of her holding emblems
3. St Anne teaching the Virgin to read; the spandrels are filled in leaf ornament, and the capitals of the pilasters are carved with acanthus leaves

Object history | Purchased for £30: 'wormeaten and split'. This panel was formerly in the collection of Emile Peyre (1824-1904), a notable Parisian collector of French medieval and renaissance artefacts. In 1895 the South Kensington Museum (renamed the V&A in 1900), bought over 300 pieces of furniture and woodwork from him, (as well as sculpture and metalwork), at a cost of £11,878. 16s. 9d. |
