Front of a gallery of pinewood, arranged in three compartments in each of which is a circular medallion with a wreath enclosing one of the following subjects:
1) a scrolled shield bearing three fleur-de-lys, the royal arms of France
2) an eagle, with wings displayed and a monster below
3) St Martin of Tours on horseback dividing his coat with a beggar.
There are three applied balusters, carved respectively with imbricated ornament, leaves and spiral bands.

Object history | Purchased for £75: 'wormeaten, worn and portions missing'. This panel was formerly in the collection of Emile Peyre (1824-1904), a notable Parisian collector of French medieval and renaissance artefacts. In 1895 the South Kensington Museum (renamed the V&A in 1900), bought over 300 pieces of furniture and woodwork from him, (as well as sculpture and metalwork), at a cost of £11,878. 16s. 9d. |
