Bed Cover

1870-1899 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Quilt of patchwork cotton, using a variation of the 'Double Nine Patch' design, which is worked in white, mustard yellow and white checked cotton fabric. The repeating design shows alternate diamonds of yellow and white cotton worked in patchwork crosses, over-quilted with a diamond pattern. These alternate with plain white diamonds quilted in an elaborate geometric design of overlapping circles or a 'wine glass' design.

The bedcover is bordered with a band of yellow and white checked cotton and a narrow outer-border of white cotton. Although now flattened through use, the bedcover has an interlining and is lined with a coarse white cotton. The quilting stitches are worked in white cotton thread.
