Materials and techniques | Woven silk brocade velvet with vertical and horizontal point repeat with 4 minimum pattern areas. Satin foundation styructure 4/1 satin, warp: silk, ivory, regular thickness. Weft: cotton, single strand. Satin & velvet warp order 3-1-2. Velvet structure: green silk, pile counts, warps 11, along weft 13. Binding weft threads: silk, thin and less thin. Brocade structure, part brocaded; 4/1 twill, count 23, shots between pile 2; metal & twist: gilt or silver (?) S. Tightness of wrap: medium. Slightly S spun silk filaments. Satin selvedges: purply brown think silk with a little blue thicker silk.
The brocade is relatively intact; the gilt thread seemed to have been used mostly in accents: in the serrated leaves at the side, in the cenre of the smallest circles; the rest of the velvet is voided NOT brocaded. |
