Printed Cotton

1818 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Printed cotton panel. The panel has a white ground printed in purple with hunting and rural scenes and views of Münster. On the left in front of a mountain is the factory of Hartmann & Fils, and below thus an inscription 'Manufacture de Münster'. Other scenes include a domed pavillion, set in a row of poplars by a lake with two swans in the foreground, a chalet in the centre at the foot of some mountains, a woman tending some cows, the ruins of both Schwartzenbourg and Pflixbourg castles, and a general view of the Alsatian plain and the Rhine. Most of the views can be identified - the pavillion was built in the garden of Hartmann's private house. The inscription 'Vue et sites...' occurs on a mound in the centre of the panel. The name of the designer 'Casimir', or J.J Karpff, is also printed on one side.

Historical context
The Hartmann & Fils factory was founded in 1776. The design of this printed cotton was copied at Rouen in 1820 at the factory of Belloncle Malfeson. J.J Karpff (1770 - 1829) worked under David in his youth, and made an inventory for the Revolution of confiscated works of art in his province. He was responsible for the preservation of many paintings and other objects and a large number were sent to the Colmar Museum of Art. He painted the portrait of the Empress Josephine and retired to Versailles in 1809. There was no record of any regular connection with the Hartmann factory.
