Chest Cover

19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Chest cover embroidered with wool and metal threads. The central field is embroidered with small black wool flower heads connected in a lattice and between them are diamond shapes made of four small diamonds in coloured wools and metal thread. The colours used are a pillar-box red, two shades of pale blue, lilac, gray, sage green and mustard. These colours, together with a pale orange and more small areas of metal thread, are used in the wide borders which contain stylised trees with small round leaves flanked by tiny birds, and alternating with what may be an extremely stylised human form. A smaller outer border contains repeating plant forms in alternating colours. The edges of the cover are bound with pale blue silk. Much shorter than is usual in these covers.
