Parts of a Gown
1760-1769 (weaving), 1775-1785 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Bodice, skirt and small panel from a woman’s gown of cream silk taffeta. The silk is woven in a pattern of pink cannelé vertical chequered bands, the squares filled with alternating trefoils and dots, the voids between the bands opposed floral sprays sprouting from islands in shades of pink and green. The bodice is lined with linen and opens down the front with elbow-length sleeves and a fitted back with narrow pleats. Of the gown skirts, three complete widths of silk remain, with 2 partial widths on each side, with pocket openings at the waist. Originally, there was probably an additional piece of silk on each side of the front. The remaining small rectangular piece of silk was probably cut down from one of these pieces.
