CARRYING YOUR ESSENTIALS

As women travelled more frequently and independently during the 19th century, sturdier bags were required to carry essential items. Manufacturers fitted bags with partitions to store tools for mending clothes on the go. The handbag shown open is fitted with a sewing kit comprising scissors, a crochet hook, button hook, stiletto (a sharp point for making holes) and a needle case [T.63 to E-1956]. Handbags with sewing- kit compartments became popular for their practicality and portability.
