This piece is one of a number of textile fragments purchased by the Museum in the 1890s as rare survivals of medieval textile printing. Technical analysis by Donald King (Keeper of Textiles 1972-1980) subsequently proved them to be fakes, probably produced in Germany in the 1880s.
