Mahogany box with an ivory key-hole and knob to the drawer. With a red leather flap in the lid. Inside are two small decorative folders wrapped in paper with a Chinese stamp, and a paper full of carmine-coloured powder.

At the back of the box is a lift-out tray containing slabs of paint, mostly unused. Strips of paper pasted on the divisions between the shallow paint trays indicate that the colours' names. The majority of the paint slabs have on the top in relief a coat of arms beneath a crest of a greyhound, and the name of the colour. A slab of different shape has on the observe only the greyhound crest.

The compartment contains five small bowls for mixing colours, a small marble slab, a little bone palette and bone brush rest, a pair of dividers, a pair of pincers with a miniature clamp, a bottle, and five little phials wrapped in cotton wool, with the Prince of Wales' crest in sealing wax on the corks.

In the centre of the box is a very heavy stone mixing tray. To the left in a small compartment is a long block of colour with Chinese characters. To the right is a china bowl for water, fitted with a glass top. It is filled with odd blocks of paint and two smooth seed pods shaped like pebbles.

The front compartment holds another of the slides wrapped in cotton wool, an irregular lump of paint, and two bottles with labels.

The pull-out drawer contains six shallow bowls for mixing colours and a front compartment holding eight brushes, an ivory pin and a tapered brush handle.

Contains three bottles with watercolours for painting velvet T.294:2 to 4-1975.

The great continuation the following Colour have gained with the most eminent Artists in Europe have caused many persons in this Metropolis to impose a spurious composition in many Colour and Paint Shops in Town and Country in imitation of those invented by Reeves & Co and in order to prevent such Frauds on the Public the original Manufacturers humbly hope those Ladies and Gentlemen who wish to have their warranted Colours will be careful to enquire before they purchase'
  • In the top left of the notice is an engraving of the royal arms and motto inscribed 'V Woodthorpe ft'. Over the two engravings is 'The only original Manufactory for every Article used in Drawing and Painting'
  • At the bottom of the pull-out drawer is a label 'Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, Adelphi May 17, 1781.'
  • Strips of paper pasted on the divisions between the shallow paint trays indicate that the colours' names should be 'PRUS.BLUE + GAMBOGE + LAKE + SAP GREEN + LT. RED + BISTRE + LT. BLUE + RW. T. SIENA + VERMILLION + GREEN BICE + YELLOW OKER + BT. UMBER + INDIGO + ORANGE + RED CHALK + PRUS.GREEN + F.WHITE + BLACK'
  • Underneath the paint slabs is stamped 'REEVES & WOODYER ORIGINAL INVENTORS OF SUPERFINE COLOURS. MANUFACTURERS TO HER MAJESTY.'
  • On the reverse of the slabof different shape is stamped 'REEVES & SONS BT.UMBER, LONDON'
