Parchment manuscript with illuminated coat of arms. A Grant by Know Ward, Clarenceux King of Arms, of new arms (viz. Arg. a cross raguly gu. between four doves az. beaked and membered of the second. Crest. Five ostrich feathers arg. in a King of Arms coronet) to John Anstis senior, at the request of John Anstis junior, dated 31 January 1740. Clarenceux' seal in a metal case. The box is shaped to contain the grant and seal and is covered with stamped leather.

Object history
The Grant of Arms was purchased together with three tabards (T.1-1937 to T.3-1037). T.1- and T.2-1937 were the tabards of John Anstis, senior (1669-1744, Garter King of Arms 1718) and his son John Anstits, junior (1708-1754), Garter Kind of Arms 1744). Father and son held a joint patent from 1727.
