Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Christening robe of white muslin with lines of feather stitching in white cotton around the waist and sleeves. The sleeves are trimmed with narrow borders of Valenciennes lace. The are two pearl buttons and a series of tapes for fastening at the back of the robe. The bottom of the skirt is trimmed with five groups of tucks:- five narrow tucks in each group. Inset into the front of the robe is a wide band of crochet in white thread, and a crochet border with a scalloped edge down each side. These borders continue over the yoke to the back of the neck and there are other, similar borders around the sleeves and hem.
The design of the crochet consists of a somewhat amorphous pattern in which may be discerned small rosettes and formal leaves in groups of three arranged on straggling stalks. The general effect is reminiscent of Venetian loosepoint lace.
