Place of origin |
The subject of Christ at the Column (as opposed to the Flagellation, when Christ is shown with flagellants) was represented relatively frequently in Spain during the 17th century following the Counter-Revolution. The low column seems to have been introduced following the discovery of the supposed original column in Rome. The sculpture is ultimately derived from the work of the Castilian sculptor Gregorio Fernández (c. 1576-1636), who executed a number of versions of this subject, and whose sculpture was widely imitated during the 17th century.
