Head
4th to 5th century (made)
Artist/Maker |
This head of a man in Egyptian granite is probably an Egypto-Roman piece made in the 5th century. The head is not worked at the back, so that the figure to which it belonged was possibly intended for a niche. The crown formed of floral rosettes instead of the jewelled band usually found on Early Christian portraits may be derived from the wreath frequently found on the slightly earlier mummy portraits.
