This medal depicting John Viscount Molesworth was given to the museum by his relative William Molesworth in 1963.
Notes from John Pope Hennessy: "Molesworth has most generously offered us this medal of his ancestor by Soldani. It is a very nice object, and of considerable rarity. I expect you will want ton thank him personally as I have done."
Massimiliano Soldani (1658-1740) was an Italian sculptor, medallist and goldsmith, who is considered to be the last great Florentine bronze worker in the tradition leading from Lorenzo Ghiberti through Giambologna to Pietro Tacca and Ferdinando Tacca. Characteristics of his work are precise modelling and elegant lines. He combined Mannerist with high Baroque.

Physical description | Medal, bronze. Obverse: John Viscount Molesworth, portrayed in profile to the right, in elegant and draped robes, with a flowing wig. Inscription along the rim. Dated ‘MDCCXII’ under the truncation of the arm. Reverse: Four slender, allegorical female figures, representing Prudence, Abundance, Peace, and Commerce, hold a laurel wreath in the centre of the medal, above an altar with a crackling flame bearing the Molesworth coat of arms. Inscription in the centre at the top, along the rim. |
