This medal was issued on the occasion of the Royal Jubilee Exhibition at Manchester and was made by the foundry Ralph Heaton & Sons. The exhibition of manufactures, science and art was held in the Jubilee Exhibition building in Trafford Park, which was designed by the local firm of Maxwell and Tuke. It opened on 3 May 1887 and closed on 10 November, having been visited by 4,765,137 people.
