This carved ivory depicting a crucifix figure was believed to be an Indo-Portuguese work dating from the seventeenth century. The facial features suggest however that it is in fact a Hispano-filipino work, or that it was possibly even carved on the Chinese mainland. A crucifix figure in Manila is broadly comparable. Margaret Longhurst noted upon the bequest: 'Mr Holland Martin came to see me on Thursday & offered to give this crucifix figure. It is only a fragment & damaged but it is a type we have not got & kept in our reserve case would be useful' (museum records).

| Physical description | Christ on the cross, ivory. The head is inclined forward, the eyes closed, the long hair is smoothed close to the head except for a lock which falls on the righ shoulder. The loin cloth is knotted on the righ hip. Both the arms, which were cut in separate pieces, are missing and the feet are partly broken away. The ivory appears to have been burnt or corroded by burial. |
