This figure representing the Crucified Christ in ivory was probably made in the first half of the 14th century in Spain (Navarre). Although the figure follows the form of French prototypes around 1300, the carving of the head differs considerably.

Physical description
Figure in ivory depicting the Crucifix. The head of Jesus falls forward to the left, the eyes closed. The loincloth which reaches to the knees is secured at the right side with a knot. The spearwound is seen on his right side.

  • Height: 21.5cm
Object history
Given by Dr W.L. Hildburgh F.S.A. in 1949; formerly on loan from Dr Hildburgh. A note on the back of a photograph, in Hildburgh's hand, records that he acquired the piece in San Sebastian in 1021; he also wrote 'From Navarre' in brackets.
