A Warrior Saint

Statue
ca. 1670 - ca. 1700 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This marble statue of a warrior saint, possibly Saint Florian, was likely carved by Artus Quellinus (II), the Younger, in Antwerp, in ca. 1670-1700. The left hand is held out at waist level and hollowed out to receive a cylindrical object, now missing, probably a lance.
The figure probably stood against a pillar in a church, and may have been part of a series. A similar piece of a "Roman Emperor" is in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore.

Object history
Previously in a private collection in Sweden, it was purchased from Daniel Katz for £62,000 (£60,000 from Central Fund and £2000 from Sculpture Department Purchase Grant), in 1978.
When acquired it has been attributed to the Flemish sculptor Willem Kerricks. Close stylistic links however to the figures of Jonathan and Gideon in Antwerp Cathedral by Artus Quellinus the Younger suggest an attribution to this sculptor.
