Medal of Pope Julius III

Medal
middle of sixteenth century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This bronze medal depicts Julius III, bareheaded, bearded and wearing a cope. On the reverse side a figure representing Prudence is shown with a snake and a mirror, restraining Fortune who is mounted on two dolphins.

The same reverse side appears on a medal struck while Julius was still only Archbishop of Siponto and so its design probably dates from before 1534.

Julius III was Pope from 1550 to 1555, a period characterised by inactivity and a failure to bring about reform.
