Portrait medal of Andrea Gerini (1691-1766)

Medal
ca. 1750 - 1766 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The medal depicts the Florentine marquess Andrea Gerini (1691-1766) in profile to the right, with a low ponytail and dressed in elegant robes. On the reverse, a winged genius holds the torso of a statue in his right hand, leaning against a rock, in allusion to the Gerini's great passion for the arts and his role as protector of artists.

The medal is undated and unsigned. However, it has been attributed to Giovanni Zanobio Weber (ca. 1737-ca. 1806), whose artistic career has yet to be reconstructed in detail. Giovanni was the nephew of the most famous medallist Lorenzo Maria Weber (1696-1768) and from him he learned the art of medal making and die-engraving. Like his uncle, he not only produced many medals, but was also employed at the Florentine mint. The medal may be dated between the 1750s (his first dated medal dates from 1755) and 1766 (the date of the sitter’s death).
