Unknown young man

Bust
seventeenth century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This ivory bust depicts a clean-shaven young man facing three-quarters to the left, with long curly hair flowing over his shoulders. He wears a loose robe, reminiscent of a classical toga. Although on acquisition the bust was thought to represent Cosimo III d' Medici this identification now seems doubtful. The authorship is similarly problematic. It may have been carved in Florence by a German or Austrian sculptor in ca. 1670 - 1700.
