This is a Venetian bronze doorknocker made in ca. 1595-1605. The knocker bears the arms of Grimani of Venice surmounted by a Doge's cap. Marino Grimani was Doge from 1595 to 1605, and the knocker must therefore have been made between these years. The design does not relate particularly to another known type of doorknocker in Venice.

Physical description | The door knocker bears in the central cartouche the arms of Grimani of Venice surmounted by a Doge's cap. At the top is a large grotesque mask from the sides of which two scrolls in the form of inverted question-marks descend to join an escallop-shaped feature at the bottom. The strapwork is decorated with a design for overlapping discs. Two pierced lugs at the top of the back for attachment. |
