This is one of thirteen medals issued by the Art-Union of London with the intention of assisting in the encouragement of metal-die engraving, inaugurated in 1842. The series is illustrating the history of British Art. The medals, which were specially commissioned, were issued annually to members of the Art-Union.
The sitter William Wyon (1795-1851) was chief engraver at the Royal Mint. He was appointed second engraver to the Royal Mint in 1816 and chief engraver in 1828. This medal was commissioned in 1851, the year of Wyon's death and that the original wax model in tinted wax on slate is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
