This piece along with the Unrepentant Thief (Mus. no. A.27-1951), is based on a figure by the Augsburg sculptor Georg Petel (b. about 1601/2; d. 1634) which is known in bronze versions.
The figures were probably carved as 'academy' pieces. The originals were intended to form part of a crucifixion group.
