Place of origin |
This chimney-piece is from an unidentified house in Dublin from an old family mansion.
Given by J.A. Dolmage Esq. on behalf of his son, the late Cecil Goodrich Dolmage, Esq., L.L.D., D.C.L., in 1907 together with a further 2 chimney pieces from the same house (A2 and A3 of 1909). The chimney piece was installed in the Director's office at the Museum for Sir Roy Strong in the mid 1980s.
The chimney piece was acquired as an example of the work of the Italian emigré workers of the late 18th century working in Ireland at that time.
Bossi (active Dublin 1785-1798, d. before 1815) was an Italian working in Dublin from 1785 to 1798, where he is recorded in the trade directories as an 'inlayer in Marble and Stucco worker', from premises at 22, later 38, Fleet Street. Malcolm Baker has suggested that he may have been a member of the Italian family of stuccoists of the 17th and 18th centuries, who were active in Germany in the 18th century.
