Circular pot cover of lead-glazed earthenware transfer-printed in underglaze colours. Decorated with a scene from Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy' entitled 'UNCLE TOBY', in which Widow Wadman asks Uncle Toby to find what is in her eye. She sits with him in his sentry box, holding here eye open with both hands while he leans towards her to look. She wears a dark blue dress and white cap; he wears a purple coat, yellow waistcoat and white stockings. The background is in shades of brown, red and green.
