A small casket in the form of a large chest, with relief carving and four pillars, one at each corner. Standing on small feet. Formed by extending the end-boards of each side; gilt all over. The central section of the top forms a sliding lid. The front back and top faces are divided into three fields each. These and the ends have a separate decorative composition in a late Gothic style.

Purchase from Mr A. Golding-Barrett for £95
Historical context
Comparison was made with Piedmontese (probably Aosta) woodwork of the 15th century by a curator at the Museo Civico di Torino writing to Peter Thornton (3/10/1963, letter in departmental file). However, note that Aosta woodwork tends to be of walnut.
