LOUNGE COAT
AND TROUSERS

1880-1890

The lounge suit, defined by its short,
loose coat, matching trousers and,
sometimes, a waistcoat, had become
popular by the late 1800s, especially
for younger men. Initially worn only
for sports, relaxation and in the
countryside, it was made in various
weights and weaves of cloth. When
in dark, sober colours, it became an
alternative for business dress, as it
remains today.
