Object history | The interiors and furnishings of 16 Carlton House Terrace, London, were designed by Owen Jones for Alfred Morrison (1821-1897), a wealthy and enthusiastic collector and patron., who had taken on the lease of the house in 1863. Furniture designed by Jones was supplied by Jackson & Graham, who had also worked with Jones at Eynsham Hall. In 1970 the house was occupied by Crockfords, a gaming club, who were preparing a programme of restoration of the interiors, carried out 1971-2. The Library on the ground floor still retained along the fireplace wall the fitted cabinets with marquetry doors in the lower section and mirrored open shelves above. Some of the fitted cabinets from the other walls had been dismantled and stored in the attic. The Crown Estate Commissioners, the ground landlords, agreed that the Museum could acquire the dismantled pieces with the intention of reassembling one of the cabinets originally fitted between the windows in the Library. |
Historical context | Another door panel, of the same design and very similar dimensions to the example in the Museum, was illustrated in a catalogue, H. Blairman & Sons Ltd., Furniture and Works of Art, 2002, no. 13. |
