The top is rectangular with rounded corners and covered in black leather with a tooled border. It rests on two pedestals connected by a flat arch and the spandrals are carved in relief with scrolled fronds. At the corners of each pedestal is a fluted pilatser surmounted by a carved lion mask holding a brass ring pendant in its jaws. The front and back elevations are identical, composed of a row of three drawers and a cupboard in each pedestal. The drawer fronts are panelled with a rope pattern moulding and fitted with loop handles of chased and gilt brass, which fasten to brass mounts in the form of marigolds. On each cupboard door there is a fielded panel surrounded with egg-and-dart mouldings and beadings.

Object history | This libary table was stated by the vendors to have been the property of the late Sir James Dewar, L.L.D., and to have been sold at Cambridge by Messrs. Puttick on 26th May 1924, Catalogue lot 75, with the description 'formerly the property of the Earl of Craven' of Coombe Abbey, Warwickshire. |
