Pier glass or wall mirror. The wood frame is carved and gilt with border of glass gilt on the underside (Verre Eglomisé). The mirror plate is rectangular in form with arched top surrounded by a three inch border of glass painted blue on the underside with a gilt design of strapwork, foliated scrolls, acanthus and husk surrounds and surmounting the arch a cresting of gilt wood carved with strapwork and acanthus.

Physical description
Pier glass or wall mirror. The wood frame is carved and gilt with border of glass gilt on the underside (Verre Eglomisé). The mirror plate is rectangular in form with arched top surrounded by a three inch border of glass painted blue on the underside with a gilt design of strapwork, foliated scrolls, acanthus and husk surrounds and surmounting the arch a cresting of gilt wood carved with strapwork and acanthus.

English, early 18th century
Verre Eglomisé is a technique of painting on glass, which was imported from France in the late 17th century; it was widely used as a decoration for mirrors. A similar example is at Penshurst Place, Kent.
