Object history | Exhibited in the International Exhibition, London, 1871. The vase is George Tinworth's first monumental exhibition work, and is mentioned in Edmund Gosse's 1883 biography of George Tinworth as being in the South Kensington Museum. Gifted to the museum by Doulton & Co. in 1872. Extract of a letter in the registered papers from Doulton to Henry Cole in 1872, 'we exhibited in the exhibition of 1871 a large vase called the Amazon Vase, the bell of which is ornamented with figures from the Antique. The design and execution of the vase were carried out by Mr George Tinworth of the Lambeth School of Art, and as the museum is the centre of these Art Schools, we thought a permanent place in the same would be only appropriate, if you think with us in this matter, we shall feel great pleasure in placing the vase at your disposal for this purpose. The vase is still in the pottery arcade of the late exhibition.' |
