John Hallifax, 1694-1750, was a leading provincial clock and barometer maker and his barometers have a distinctive design although they do vary in quality.

The case, which has mahogany cross-banding, is constructed like a long-case clock with hooded top. The mercury reservoir contained in a square box corresponds to the plinth of such a clock.

Brief description
Barometer, English, made about 1725-1750 by John Hallifax. Walnut veneer on oak, inscribed 'J. Hallifax Barnsley Invt et Fecit',
Physical description
Barometer of walnut veneer on oak. The case has mahogany cross-banding, and is constructed like a long-case clock with hooded top. Brass dial with arched top, silvered chapter ring and silvered roundel with maker's signature. Gilt brass spandrel ornaments. Brass setting ring engraved with numerals from 1 to 30 and also with 1 to 10 repeated three times. Within the ring, a star ornament is inlaid in mahogany. The mercury reservoir is contained in a square box corresponding to the plinth of a long-case clock.
