Whereas a locket containing a portrait revealed the identity of one's beloved, a miniature of just the eye and a few curls - as here - maintained a discreet or teasing secrecy. The flamboyant bow to which the locket is attached is a later addition and is French. Originally it is likely to have been worn on a chain.

Circular locket with chased foliate decoration on back and front, within a painting of an eye on ivory. The locket is suspended from a later French ribbon bow with pin fitting.
