Hygeia to the left stands facing right in profile wearing flowing classical robes, and carries a branch in her right hand. Her left hand extends a snake over the flames of a central altar. Her father Aesculapius, Greek god of medicine and healing, turns his head back towards her in a twisted pose, holding a serpent entwined staff in his left hand. The medallion is mounted in a gilt frame.
