Louise Hindsgavl (b.1973) is a Danish ceramic artist whose work centres on the small-scale porcelain figure. Her figures are influenced by her exploration of somewhat ambiguous and frequently dark themes, these often holding sexual or fetishistic overtones. As such, the work has a contemporary resonance, yet the appearance of masked figures, or of humans morphing into animals, suggests a relationship with 18th century porcelain figures, as well as with the mythological themes of certain small-scale Renaissance sculpture. The resulting work is engaging and intriguing, and also beautiful.
