Oil Rubber

ca. 1985-2005 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This piece is from a group of tools assembled for display in the V&A by Paul Holdway, formerly head engraver at Spode's factory, which includes items made by Paul Holdway himself. The accession numbers for the group runs from C.40 to C.49-2008.

The sand-filled boss supports the copperplate as it is worked on by the engraver. The tools include a lens, a needle for drawing onto a printing plate, a burin or 'graver' for engraving deep lines, and a scraper for removing any raised edges created by the burin. The engraver uses a hammer and single punch to produce dotted areas and lines, and an oil rubber like this one (made from printers' flannel), for wiping copperplates.
