Modernist designs began to be mass-produced by Germany’s porcelain industry at the start of the 1930s. Berlin’s State Porcelain Manufacture (SPM) led the way, closely followed by Bavarian manufacturer, Arzberg. They led to the first all-white modern tablewares. Their stark appearance emphasised their functionality and suggested a scientific aspect to their design.
