Gallery label
This vase is one of Leerdam's 'Unica' (unique) range. Although the form of the vase was designed by Copier and is repeatable, each example is handmade and the behaviour of the coloured glass inclusions is random. It is this unpredictability which means that no two are the same. A D Copier (1901-91) joined Leerdam in 1914 as an apprentice in the etching department. His further studies in typography and graphic design in Utrecht and Rotterdam were largely financed by the glassworks. From 1921 he supervised the production of artist-designed glass and the related advertisements, exhibition installations etc. In 1922-3 he began his own designs for glass; he introduced the Leerdam-Unica series and in 1927 he became artistic director; he retired in 1971.
